During the week of Nov. 21-27, Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, six; South Hilo, four; South Kohala, three; Puna, two; and North Kohala, one.
So far this year, there have been 893 DUI arrests compared to 974 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.3%.
There have been 753 major accidents so far this year compared to 733 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.7%.
To date, there have been 33 official traffic fatalities compared to 25 fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 32%.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
